Chorbat Valley is a beautiful valley of the Shyok river and is the traditional border between Baltistan and Ladakh. To the south of the Chorbat La pass, the Hanu valley carries a stream that flows down to join the Indus River near the village of Dah. The Chorbat, Lungpa and Hanu valleys constituted the main route from Baltistan to Ladakh in the past. Being the main travel route between Baltistan and Leh, the route carried part of the Silk Road traffic, which enriched the people of Chorbat.
During the Kargil War in 1999, the recapture of Chorbat La was a significant achievement for the Indian forces. The operation was conducted under the leadership of Major Sonam Wangchuk of the Ladakh Scouts. The successful recapture of Chorbat La played a crucial role in the overall victory of the Indian forces during the war. At 18,000 feet, the challenge was more than just fighting the enemy because the cold weather here was deadlier here than a bullet.
Note: Since Chorbat Valley is situated at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, tourists are advised to follow the acclimatization process. Please refer to the PDF attached in the important links section.
