Leh, the enchanting capital of Ladakh, is a land of unparalleled beauty, surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains, vast barren landscapes, and pristine rivers. The town's stark, rugged terrain is interspersed with lush green valleys and the tranquil waters of the Indus River, offering a surreal and captivating charm. Leh’s Buddhist monasteries, with their ancient architecture and serene ambiance, add a spiritual aura to the breathtaking scenery, making it a place of both natural and cultural splendour. Operation Bison, launched in November 1948, played a pivotal role in securing the region, marking Leh not only as a symbol of natural beauty but also of India’s resolve and determination in the face of adversity.
During the 1948 conflict in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army faced the challenge of repelling Pakistani raiders who had infiltrated the region to capture the princely state. With superior numbers, logistics, and commanding positions, the raiders besieged Skardu and set their sights on Leh. Maj Prithi Chand, along with 40 volunteers from the 2nd Battalion, Dogra Regiment, undertook a perilous winter march across Zojila Pass to deliver rifles and ammunition to Leh's garrison. Arriving on 8 March 1948, they helped organise a defensive force bolstered by additional troops and weapons from the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces.
