Hanle is a picturesque and remote village located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) above sea level, Hanle is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and astronomical significance.
Hanle is home to the 17th-century Hanle Monastery, also known as Hanle Gompa. This monastery belongs to the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. It was established by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal in collaboration with the Tibetan lama Stag-tsang-ras-pa. The monastery is a significant religious site and houses a small community of monks who continue to practice and preserve the ancient traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
One of the most remarkable features of Hanle is the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which is one of the highest observatories in the world. Located at an altitude of 4,500 meters, the observatory is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The clear skies and minimal light pollution make Hanle an ideal location for astronomical observations. The Himalayan Chandra Telescope, a 2-meter gamma-ray telescope, is one of the key instruments at the observatory.
Hanle is situated in the Hanle River valley, which is part of the larger Changthang plateau. The region is characterized by its arid, high-altitude desert landscape, dotted with small streams and wetlands. The valley is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Tibetan wild ass (kiang), blue sheep, and various species of migratory birds. The Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, which encompasses Hanle, is a protected area aimed at conserving the unique flora and fauna of the region.
Hanle is accessible by road from Leh, the capital of Ladakh, via the villages of Nyoma and Loma. The journey to Hanle offers breathtaking views of the rugged Himalayan terrain and the serene beauty of the high-altitude plains. Due to its proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border, an inner line permit is required for Indian tourists to visit Hanle. Foreign tourists are currently not allowed to visit the village.
Hanle has gained popularity among travelers seeking offbeat destinations and those interested in stargazing. The village's remote location and pristine environment provide a unique and tranquil experience for visitors.
