The Battle of Jhangar was a significant engagement during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947-48, fought over the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Jhangar, a small town nestled in the rugged terrain of the Pir Panjal range, held strategic importance due to its position along the line of control. The battle is remembered for the bravery and resilience of the Indian soldiers who fought to reclaim the town from Pakistani forces. The Battle of Jhangar took place in late 1947 and early 1948. The town of Jhangar fell to the advancing Pakistani forces in November 1947. The loss of Jhangar was a significant setback for the Indian forces, as it disrupted their communication lines and posed a threat to nearby areas. Determined to reclaim Jhangar, the Indian Army launched a counter-attack. The journey to Jhangar was arduous, with soldiers traversing treacherous mountain paths and facing constant threats from enemy forces. Indian soldiers displayed extraordinary courage, repelling multiple enemy attacks and inflicting heavy casualties. The Indian forces launched a multi-pronged assault to recapture Jhangar. The use of artillery and mortar fire played a crucial role in suppressing enemy defences and the town was recaptured in March 1948. The Battle of Jhangar remains a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers who fought to defend their nation's integrity. The operation showcased meticulous planning and unwavering resolve, turning the tide of the conflict in favor of the Indian forces. Brigadier Mohammad Usman often referred to as the "Lion of Nowshera", was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. His dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire future generations of soldiers.
