Zoji La is a stunning mountain pass in Jammu and Kashmir, connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh at an altitude of 3,528 metres. Surrounded by breathtaking snow-capped peaks, lush meadows and rugged terrain, the pass offers a picturesque view of the majestic Himalayas. Its strategic importance is matched only by its natural beauty, making it both a vital military route and a visual marvel. Its closure every winter leads to the disruption in the road between Srinagar and Leh. To overcome this, a new tunnel is under construction to make this into an all-weather route. Despite its challenging terrain, Zoji La remains a vital link, admired for both its scenic grandeur and strategic significance.
During the 1947-1948 Indo-Pakistani War, Pakistani forces captured Zoji La, prompting Operation Bison to reclaim it. The Battle of Zoji La Pass during the 1947-1948 Indo-Pak War was a decisive Indian Army operation to reclaim the strategic mountain pass in Ladakh from Pakistani raiders. In one of the most audacious operations in military history, tanks were employed on a track which was till then only usable by jeeps and that too in fair weather. Stuart Light tanks of 7th Light Cavalry under Lt Col Rajinder Singh ‘Sparrow’ led this attack. The turrets from the tanks were removed and transported separately from the main body and re-assembled near the battlefield. The presence of tanks at such an altitude surprised the enemy, who fled. This led to opening of the route to Kargil and to Leh thus facilitating movement of forces. The operation showcased Indian military ingenuity and remains a hallmark of high-altitude warfare.
