About Se La

Beyond its military significance, Se La Pass is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and pristine landscapes, it offers spectacular views of the Eastern Himalayas. The pass is not only a gateway to Tawang but also a serene destination that blends its rich history with the tranquil beauty of the region, making it a place of both reflection and awe.

The Battle of Se La, fought on November 18, 1962, was a pivotal engagement during the Sino-Indian War, specifically in the Tawang region. The battle was part of the larger Chinese offensive aimed at breaking through India’s defensive positions in the Eastern sector. The Chinese forces, launched a coordinated attack on the Se La and Senge Dzong defences. The Indian 4 Infantry Division, commanded by Brigadier Hoshiar Singh, was stationed at Se La to defend the vital pass. However, the Chinese forces, executing a well-planned offensive, outflanked the Indian positions from both the West and East. The Battle of Se La highlighted the bravery and resilience of the Indian soldiers, who fought tenaciously in the face of overwhelming odds.
