The Battle of Tololing was a key engagement during the Kargil War (1999), fought between Indian and Pakistani forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Drass sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Tololing, a strategically important peak, overlooks the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH 1D), a critical supply route for India. Pakistani forces, including the Northern Light Infantry and irregulars, had occupied the peak, disrupting Indian logistics and threatening the highway. The battle began on 22 May 1999, with Indian forces tasked with recapturing the position. The initial assault faced fierce resistance due to the well-entrenched Pakistani positions, and the strength of the enemy forces was initially underestimated. The Indian Army launched a series of offensives to dislodge the enemy, but the battle was prolonged due to the difficult terrain and harsh conditions. Despite facing heavy casualties, including the loss of several officers, Indian forces continued their efforts. On 12 June, a final assault was launched, supported by artillery fire, and Indian troops successfully flanked the enemy positions. By 14 June, Tololing was recaptured. This victory was crucial in securing the region and ensuring the safety of vital supply lines, marking a significant step toward India’s eventual success in the Kargil War.
