About Gurudongmar

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest and most pristine lakes in the world, located in the Mangan District of Sikkim, India. Situated at an elevation of approximately 17,800 feet (5,430 meters), the lake is nestled amidst the majestic Great Himalayas and is considered sacred by Buddhists and Sikhs.

The lake is named after Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava visited the lake in the 8th century. The locals, facing a severe water shortage due to the lake being frozen for most of the year, sought his help. It is believed that Guru Padmasambhava touched a part of the lake, which then never froze again, providing a continuous water supply to the people.

Gurudongmar Lake is fed by the Gurudongmar Glacier and is a moraine-dammed lake. It is located to the north of the Kanchendzonga range, in a high plateau area connected with the Tibetan Plateau. The lake provides one of the source streams that join the Tso Lahmu and form the source of the Teesta River. The lake remains completely frozen during the winter months, from November to mid-May. Despite the harsh conditions, the area surrounding the lake is inhabited by yaks, blue sheep, and other high-altitude wildlife.

The lake is accessible by road from Lachen via the Thangu Valley. The journey to Gurudongmar Lake is an adventure in itself, passing through rugged terrain and high alpine pastures covered with rhododendron trees. Indian tourists are allowed to visit the lake, but foreigners need to obtain a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

Gurudongmar Lake is not only a site of natural beauty but also a place of spiritual significance. Devotees and tourists alike visit the lake to offer prayers and soak in the serene and divine atmosphere. The best time to visit Gurudongmar Lake is from March to June, when the weather is pleasant, and the surroundings are lush and green.

In recent years, pollution has affected the clarity of the lake's waters, which were once crystal clear. Efforts are being made to preserve the pristine nature of the lake and its surroundings.

Gurudongmar Lake stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of natural beauty and spiritual reverence. It continues to inspire awe and devotion among all who visit.

Note: Since Gurudongmar is situated at an altitude of approximately 17,800 feet above sea level, tourists are advised to follow the acclimatization process. Please refer to the PDF attached in the important links section.
