In 1965, Kachchh became a significant battleground during the Rann of Kutch conflict
between India and Pakistan. The region witnessed intense clashes over strategic
territories like Biar Bet, with India successfully defending its land. Today, Kachchh is
celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, including vast salt marshes, vibrant wildlife,
and the annual Rann Utsav. Its unique blend of scenic beauty and cultural richness
makes it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking both history and natural splendour.
The 1965 Kanjarkot conflict, also known as the Rann of Kutch conflict, began when
Pakistan's Indus Rangers seized Kanjarkot in the Rann of Kutch, a disputed region
between India and Pakistan. In February 1965, Pakistan’s forces made an aggressive
move by occupying Kanjarkot, prompting India to respond swiftly. The Indian Army
assigned the responsibility of removing this encroachment to the 31 Infantry Brigade ,
which was tasked with securing the region. Pakistan retaliated by mobilizing its 8 Infantry
Division, bolstering its forces with armour. Over the next few months, intense land battles
ensued between the two nations in March and April 1965. Despite facing heavy
resistance, Indian forces launched counterattacks to regain control of the region. The
Indian forces, under the leadership of their commanders, displayed remarkable resolve
and determination in pushing back Pakistan’s aggression. In a series of decisive
operations, Indian troops recaptured key positions.
