In 1962, as tensions with China escalated, the Siang Frontier Division was a key defensive area for India. By February, posts were established at Gelling, and by September, seven new Assam Rifles posts were set up in anticipation of the Chinese threat. The sector was divided into three sub-sectors: Menchuka, Manigong, and Tuting, each with designated Indian units to defend strategic locations.
