The 1965 war erupted following escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region. Both countries had fought a war in 1947-48 over the same territory. In 1965, Pakistan launched Operation Gibraltar, aimed at infiltrating Kashmir and inciting rebellion against Indian rule. India responded by launching a full-scale military counter-offensive. The war was primarily fought along the International Border and in the Kashmir Valley, with major battles in areas such as Akhnoor, Chhamb, Khem Karan and Kutch.
The Battle of Akhnoor was a significant engagement where Pakistan sought to sever the vital road link between Jammu and Poonch, thereby isolating Indian forces in the region. The Pakistani attack initially made substantial gains, but fierce resistance by Indian troops under challenging conditions prevented the fall of Akhnoor, safeguarding a critical strategic position.
The Battle of Khem Karan, particularly known for its tank engagements, became a decisive moment in the war. India’s forces successfully halted Pakistan’s advance, earning the area the nickname "Graveyard of Tanks".
In Chhamb, intense fighting occurred as Pakistan attempted to break through India’s defenses, but Indian forces held strong.
In the Battle of Haji Pir Pass, Indian forces captured the strategically vital pass, blocking Pakistan’s supply routes and securing the Jammu region, further strengthening India’s position in the War.
Meanwhile, in Rann of Kutch, the conflict over disputed territory escalated, with both sides engaged in localised skirmishes, eventually leading to the full-scale War of 1965.
The War of 1965 saw many acts of valour by Indian soldiers, some of whom were posthumously awarded high honours for their courage.
